Beauty Centre
The series is set in a beauty parlor that was originally a highclass barber shop, but the owner, Armando, suddenly died, leaving two sons, a wife, a mountain of debts and a pregnant Albanese mistress. This was a real tragedy for his family, and also for the Albanian girl. Nevertheless, his widow Anna put on a brave face and, showing great enterprise, converted the barber shop into a beauty salon for women, rich and poor alike. The story depicts the lives of all the characters who either work at the salon or frequent it. The women meet up and exchange confidences while they are sitting around or waiting to have their hair fixed; this is their world and they find it easier to be themselves here. So we get to know about the lives of the various women: Anna, the owner, Francesca, her accountant friend, Vicky, the lover of a shady businessman, and Duska, the young woman that Anna’s dead husband got pregnant. We also follow the complicated sex life of a young gay hairdresser called Luca. Other characters come into the story later, adding even more spice to the series, until we have about a dozen portraits of different women, who are successful or otherwise, aggressive or gentle, wicked and ruthless or understanding and tolerant, but all modern women, with their good points and contradictions.
